Western Water Leads by Example

Western Water is an Australian regional urban water and wastewater business in the state of Victoria servicing more than 115,000 customers over 3000 square kilometers to the northwest of Melbourne.

Recognizing and understanding its responsibilities to the local community, Western Water is committed to assisting all customers to implement sustainable water management practices. Water Achiever is a key tool in the organization's range of education and conservation programs to assist business customers to improve their water efficiency.

Western Water is leading by example in water conservation, recently undergoing the Water Achiever self-diagnostic program. As a result Western Water has developed its own water management plan and is committed to implementing water efficiency measures across the business.

Western Water Chief Executive, John Wilkinson, said the Water Achiever program gave the organization an opportunity to review its own water conservation actions and provide a clear plan for the future.

“It was a valuable experience to undertake the program internally. Not only does this demonstrate to stakeholders Western Water’s firm commitment to water conservation, it also provides an excellent framework to look at our own water management practices and areas for improvement”, Mr Wilkinson said.

“We will implement the recommended actions that Water Achiever has generated for our business and look forward to repeating the process in six months to review our progress and set new objectives”.

A small team of Western Water’s Customer Relations staff has been trained in Water Achiever’s account management function to develop relationships with business customers, offering them the opportunity to participate in the program.

Initially, the Water Achiever team will focus their efforts on local schools and health centers, both as high water users and key customer groups.

Western Water General Manager Customer Relations, Suzanne Evans, said that Water Achiever was a useful tool that can be delivered by staff for maximum impact.

“We want to provide our key customers with water conservation support without employing external consultants to assist with delivery. Water Achiever is an effective tool that our staff can use to establish partnerships with our key customers, to work with them to deliver ongoing sustainable water management practices”, Ms Evans said.

Western Water selected Water Achiever because it is an easy to use and cost effective account management tool that not only helps to strengthen relationships with customers, but also provides a practical step-by-step approach to improving water management.
